Taiwan's PC Distributors See Sales Growth in 4th Quarter November 29, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Although sales in Taiwan's PC retail market were hard hit following the Sept. 21 earthquake, Synnex Technology International Corp. and Acer Sertek Inc. saw brisk growth in October revenues. This was due to their strategic alliances with online stock brokerages and promotion campaigns for corporate PCs. Acer Sertek generated NT$1.87 billion in revenues in October, a new monthly record. Its strategic alliance with Yuan Ta Securities Co., Ltd. has boosted PC shipments by 20,000 units since mid-September, and total shipments for this project alone are expected to reach 30,000 this year. (NT$31.73 = US$1) Also, Acer Sertek has seen an increase in orders for servers, high-end desktops, and notebook PCs from corporate clients this year. The company expects its revenues in November and December to break October's monthly record. Synnex Technology saw NT$3.74 billion in October sales. The company's sales are growing steadily. Much of this growth is due to its cooperation with President Securities Corp. Because sales of PCs often peak in December, Synnex expects its revenues in the fourth quarter to hit a new high. Also, notebook PC makers Twinhead International Corp. and Leo Systems Inc. have benefited from their strategic links with local securities brokerages, and other similar "package" promotions. Leo, for example, estimates its notebook sales for this year at 170,000 to 180,000 units. Twinhead expects to sell 5,000 PCs in November, of which more than 60 percent will be sold via packages offered by securities firms and special promotion schemes of cram schools, bookstores or insurance firms. (Last year, the proportion sold through such package promotions stood at less than 10 percent.) Both Leo and Twinhead have high expectations for sales in December, which is regarded as the main PC shopping season by consumers in Taiwan. (Commercial Times, Taiwan)
