HighwayMaster Announces 92 Percent Revenue Growth and Significant Improvement in

Results for Third
Quarter

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1999--HighwayMaster
Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:HWYM), a leading provider of wireless
voice and data communications services to the commercial trucking and
service vehicle industries, today reported significant improvement in
financial results for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 1999. Total
revenues for the 1999 third quarter increased 91.5 percent to $29.1
million versus $15.2 million for the 1998 third quarter. The company's
net loss was reduced by 66.7 percent to $6.2 million ($0.25 per
share), including $2.8 million in net non-recurring charges, for the
third quarter this year versus the comparable period a year ago. The
net loss for the third quarter of 1998 was $18.5 million ($0.74 per
share), including $7.6 million in non-recurring charges. Excluding the
non-recurring charges, net loss improved 68.8 percent to $3.4 million
($0.14 per share) versus $10.9 million ($0.44 per share) for the
comparable period in 1998.
For the first nine months of 1999, total revenues were up 63.3
percent to $79.4 million, versus $48.6 million for the comparable
period in 1998. The net loss improved 87.4 percent to $5.6 million
($0.22 per share), including $3.5 million in net non-recurring income
items, compared with a net loss of $44.1 million ($1.77 per share),
including $9.5 million in non-recurring charges, for the first nine
months of 1998. Excluding the one-time charges, the net loss improved
73.8 percent to $9.1 million ($0.36 per share), versus $34.6 million
($1.39 per share) for the comparable period in 1998.
Service revenue for the 1999 third quarter was up 11.5 percent
from a year ago, reflecting the larger number of Series 5000 units in
the installed base. Service revenue gross margin for the third quarter
1999 increased 63.7 percent to $5.6 million compared to $3.4 million
in 1998. Service revenue gross margin percentage for the 1999 third
quarter was 44.8 percent, compared to 30.5 percent for the same period
in 1998. Product revenue for the 1999 third quarter was $16.6 million,
including $13.3 million recognized for approximately 7,000 units
previously installed with member companies of SBC Communications.
