<<Other than getting a second 56k modem, does anyone have an alternative?>>

About the only other alternative is DirectPC, which is 384K coming in, but I think you still need a telephone line for outbound. That may have changed, though.

Poet, DirectPC and alternatives: I'm pretty much in the same position as you in the NYC 'burbs, with Cablevision stating that a year-end rollout of cable modem "is possible" (ha!, won't happen for at least six months, I'm sure) and Bell Atlantic saying pretty much the same thing, with no fixed timetable.

Cooters' suggestion regarding DirectPC is another option, with strings: you still do need the attached phone line for the up-link, as the satellite is down-link feed only, albeit that's the one with which we're most concerned. I think that DirectPC can do substantially better than 384kbps, as high as 2mbps during light traffic hours. I'm waiting for the AOL JV with Hughes to kick in and see what kind of package they put together. They'll probably try to make it attractive as I believe that DirectPC is not getting as many subs as planned.

SI's crawling pace the last two weeks has just made the twisted pair syndrome that more frustrating.
