Now you'll have to call them! Or visit their website.
The cable company provided the modem. I bought the ethernet card because I have a Mac, and they just had PC ones in stock.

>>>>>>Cost is cheaper than DSL - I pay 29.95/month, including ELNK (I have Charter.) Modem rental is free for 6 months - will decide then whether to buy or rent.<<<<<<<

I entered the line below onto a search engine and got lots of hits regarding the ins and outs of having a cable modem. One thing you should consider before you go this way is that when you post a message it will upload at exactly the same speed as what it does now because you have to keep your regular modem for sending information. The speed is encountered when you download (like switching from page to page here at SI.) I went down to the people that provide the service here and they told me that using their cable modem I could expect to download at 17 megabytes a second. That sounds a little fast to me I was expecting maybe 1MB but not much more. I said that it was probably so fast because I was on their computer and I tried out their computer at SI and it was so fast I couldn't really tell how long it took to switch from page to page. It seemed like about 1/3 of a second or so. The price was 39.95 a month with them providing the modem and there was a charge to install which I forget but it was something like 100 dollars if they had to send a guy out to do it for you. I also forget if that included the ethernet card.

This is what I did a search on and got over 500 hits explaining cable modems----> "cable modem" +ethernet +instructions

Remember that after you get a cable modem you will still have to have your puter connected to a phone line for uploading because the cable is just for downloading.

The only reason I didn't get the modem then was that I wanted to install it on my new computer which has been sitting here since last Janurary because the person I bought it off of installed the wrong operating system. I bought it off of ebay and the guy I got it from said he would install windows 95 for free because I already had a lisence for it (all I would have to do is enter my product key number.) Well to make a long story a little shorter, he installed windows 98 and i fought with him over it. I said I shouldn't have to pay because I didn't order it and he made the mistake. He wouldn't make it right. I called microsoft and they weren't any help. I offered to give them my credit card number if they would just give me the number I need to make my puter work. They wouldn't do that. I am talking about the orginal windows 98 here, not the updated version or CE or whatever it is called. A friend of mine just bought win98 last week even though she already had it because she had deleted her driver. She already had win98 on her puter but she deleted her modem driver and didn't know how to fix it without entering the CD which is what the puter kept telling her to do. Anyway I tried her number because I was going to buy her second copy but it won't work. I guess it might be because hers is an updated version of win 98. The reason I am writing all of this is because I am going to ask if any of you have the orginal win 98 on your puter? If anyone does will you send me (private message) that 20 digit product key that makes the damn thing work. There is nothing illegal about this because I promise It is for testing purposes only, (I will delete it after I test) I only want to see if there is a number out there somewhere that I can use to access my new puter with. I will buy it if I can find out where.

When I talked to the technichian from microsoft he told me that 100% of the people that have called in wanting help with software that they had bought off of ebay had bought software that was bootleg.

_______________

Someone please be nice and help me, this new 450 has been sitting here unused for 10 months now. It might be outdated by the time I ever get to use it.

I also tried to delete the win 98 off of the new puter but it wouldn't have made it much better for me because after I got to reading my manual from sony about this old 166 I found out that my windows 95 CD is what is called a "companion" CD, that means that win 95 can't be installed on a different computer with it.

Whew this was the longest post I ever struggled through. Too long to proof read or spell check.
