Below are some reasons why I think that Solaris/SUN will dominate in the web based world of computing.

1. Primary Competition:
To date, MSFT has not competed with it's customer base. After all, manufacturing companies and consumers do not butt head with MSFT. If you are not in the IT industry, when was the last time MSFT took a sale away from you. They sold you a product and people bought it. Also, most of the consumers are probably happy with the product because they rarely had the opportunity to use an alternative product. Whether this was an illegal business practice is to be determined by the courts or through settlement.

Present time:
As we all know, in the future, the growth of the IT sector will be related to companies that can provide novel products that make running a business more efficient over the web. This is where the problem starts. MSFT had Expedia, has MSN, Web TV and various other products/companies that are internet related. But if you were a ISP, ISV, ASP, portal site, etc. would you want to commit your hard earned money to a potential competitor.

MSFT does not have web-related products so they have invested in companies that provide services thus competing with the new web based, growth oriented sector of the market. I believe even if SUN and MSFT had products of equal quality that most web companies would select SUNW because they support their customers and do not compete against them. This extremely positive for SUNW/Linux and any company that compete with MSFT for web based market share.

In conclusion, MSFT must dominate the selling of services sector of the internet to succeed. Whether they can pull off another grand slam is what makes a stock go up and down. In the end, SUNW will continue to sell and dominate the server segment because they have postioned themselves better for the future of web-related computing.

All, IMO, Bob.
