in my opinion the only reason for Gosling to be hesitant about Linux is to boost Solaris.

Grant, there was certainly an aspect to that. Even running it through the magic filter though, there was a sincerity of chronic concern. Gosling cares most about 'Java' I'm sure and is not going around "boosting Solaris". If you follow Robert's links in response to my question, you'll understand there's much more to it.

On the other hand, Linus has had a bug up his byte count about Sun and "Java" all along that has rivaled Larry Wall. I'm thinking Linus purposefully went the odd direction with the threads to keep Linux from becoming a Java platform and somehow obviating the value of the "Linux" platform in the same way it (Java) threatened Windows.

I truly hope Linux reworks the threading architecture to accommodate Java in a way that makes it a better Java development and server platform than Windows. Right now, it isn't, thanks to Linux kernel decisions made early on, just as Gosling first mentioned.

JC Jaros: I hope you eventually find the "right guy", and I hope my responses have at least been partially helpful to you.

Yes this one has, thank you. I'll look deeper into that reworking the kernel stuff. Your previous response though was just blind conjecture about James Gosling's 'motives' being 'investor (hype) related', and that wasn't helpful (or accurate) at all.

I'm sorry if I seemed perturbed at your first reply (although my response about 'Thomas- get us a new guy' was meant in good fun). I'm beginning to become really weary of that certain wing of the Linux community that chooses to trash talk Sun, apparently because ego and railing against that which is commercial is what actually motivates them. It's a big turn off. What's worse is reading Sun/McNealy being compared to M$/Gates as both enemies of "open source".
There are a great number of Linuxers who are clueless beyond belief. The average SUNW shareholder has a better grasp on the big picture than does the average 'Linux' geek (at least the ones I read on /.).

I run Debian, but I'm absolutely appalled at Bruce Parens "license - license - license" rants and threatening to sue Corel (over something *so lame no less) even before Corel has made a thin dime on "Linux" and in fact after they've made great contribution to the community. The 'community' isn't a particularly *inclusive* body. The Linux community of Bruce Parens is more like the current Republican party in the 'inclusiveness' department. Following subsequent posts from Parens, he defends the accusation that he did damage to the larger community effort by POINTING TO THE CURRENT REDHAT STOCK PRICE as proof to the contrary. I think that's sad.

I'm a great believer in 'open standards'. I'm a long time participant with 'freeware'. Those two things btw, as well define Sun Microsystems. I have strong opinions about the changing nature of intellectual property. From this point on though, you won't read me use the phrase "open source". I believe strongly that the numbskulls have already damaged their 'brand' from within, continue to do so, and I don't want any part of it.

It's made me realize that I really don't care what OS I run on my PC as long as it's free. I've come to realize that this talk about "free" as in freedom is a lot of bullshit. These guys are more license rabid than Steve Ballmer. If they're so into "freedom", why not Public Domain everything? It worked for folk music.

I've come to believe that the SCSL is actually a superior model to the GPL and I'd believe that even if I were not a SUNW shareholder.
