Scot, Time is getting tight for them to even attempt to fill the chain before Christmas. If they do not this will be a large bump in the road for Intel and a huge (permanent?) bump for AMD.
Ther are many people who are brand sold on commodity items, like gas or computers where it is octane or speed than count...all else is advertising.
I am sure there are people who buy ESSO due to the tiger in the tank.
What next...frequent computing miles?

Sure is nice to be able to see, touch and test the "here and now" Athlon in the retail channel! Thanks for the survey results.

The Athlon is "front row centre" in the display area in our local Home Computer Center The sales guys and gals, as I have mentioned earlier, tell me that sales of the Athlon are brisk. They repeatedly talk about how "smooth" it operates! They, to a person, tell me it's the best computer in the marketplace...and that was the 650MHz Athlon!

The PC magazine 16th annual technical excellence award and Maximum PC's "exaltation" of the Athlon provides all the arm's-length testimony that many prospective purchasers will require in arriving at a PII/PII vs. Athlon purchasing decision, businesses included.

Obviously competitors need be concerned when the Athlon draws such high praise from such high-profile arms-length sources, particularly when currently, the only real competition seems to be a "some-time-in-the-future" repeatedly promised competitor.

By the time the repeatedly promised "some-time-in-the-future" competitor "hits the pavement", the "horse may already be out of the barn", if, in fact, that isn't the case already (which is my personal opinion).

If indeed "the horse is already out of the barn" and OEM negative muffled murmurings about the dearth of competitive supply at a competitive price has any substance, then any actions by competitors, including price cuts (a last ditch tactic to try to decelerate the eroding marketshare), may not be overly effective.

Once a new product, like the Athlon with its A-plus benchmark results and technical excellence awards and seeming ease of production, gets a toehold in the marketplace (which it now has), there is little reason to doubt that a geometric or high arithmetic growth rate will follow! The Athlon is building momentum by the day and with each day of delay of the repeatedly promised "some-time-in-the-future" competitor, the task of impeding the Athlons momentum will increase! A daunting task to compete with "a better mousetrap at a better price" especially when that "better mousetrap at that better price" has been allowed to bask unhindered, "front and centre" in the marketplace and gain a very strong market presence in a very short time frame!
