you said...and you are right of course.

I will be glad to be corrected, but isn't SiC = silicon carbide = carborundum, the stuff on grinding wheels and sandpaper?

i should have said...in a pure crystal form.

i have been told by creetians that pure silicon carbide crystals have only been found on meteorites and in labs. cree has patented processes to grow large crystals. crystals themselves are not patentable, but the growing process is. silicon carbide crystals are the second hardest substance known and tolerate much higher temperatures than diamonds. in a test, 90% of jewelers incorrectly identified SiC jewelry as diamonds. special test equipment has recently been invented to solve this.
