I expect you're right. For most of the history of MPU's, that has been pretty much the situation, with the best part possible (ie. no celerons) being the only one taking up FAB space, and available in two or three speeds.

We do have some real differences now with large cache chips for servers and low power portable chips being actual differentiated parts.

Maybe the current fashion industry style artificial segmentation will continue to some degree, with a greater variety of parts being made available through SX style performance restrictions.
