zonkie,

Remember that after you get a cable modem you will still have to have your puter connected to a phone line for uploading because the cable is just for downloading.

No! This just isn't the case. I have a RoadRunner Cable modem and no phone line connections are required for uploading. The traffic goes out the same LAN card that the data comes in on. And the speed is 10Mb (10 MegaBITs per second). Some cable systems 'limit' the upload speed to prevent folks from running websites from their home system's computers, some do not 'limit' the speed. I can upload a 1+MB message in less than 17 seconds, that's a bit slower than the download speed (usually Netscape says 150kbs -> 230kbs when downloading from internet sites where they and the connection can support that speed)

Ben A.

The cable download/analog upload cannibalization is to compete with DSL before the cable is upgraded to HFC. When done, one throws away the old 56K. You will receive an email telling you what to do. Cablecos are rapidly upgrading, except in areas where local governments have demanded open access. There, there is no incentive yet to upgrade.
