FLORIDA STATE, VIRGINIA TECH TO FIGHT FOR TITLE

(AP) - Book it: No. 1 Florida State vs. No. 2 Virginia Tech in
the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4. In what will become a perfect ending to
a perfect regular season, Virginia Tech is certain to hold off
Nebraska in the final Bowl Championship Series standings, setting
up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 game for the national title in New Orleans.
The Hokies (11-0) increased their second-place lead over the
Huskers from .63 points to 1.54 points in the latest BCS
standings released Monday. The final BCS standings, which
determines the teams that will play in its title game, will be
released Dec. 5. The advantage, according to one computer expert,
is all but impossible to overcome -- even if Nebraska routs Texas
in Saturday's Big 12 Conference title game. "There's no
suspense," computer expert Jerry Palm said. "If Nebraska wins
50-0, I'm not sure it could overtake Virginia Tech."

TV REPORTS: MICHIGAN STATE'S SABAN TO COACH LSU

(AP) - Michigan State football coach Nick Saban will replace
fired Gerry DiNardo at LSU, two Louisiana television stations
reported Monday. A Michigan station reported that Saban has been
offered the job but had not yet decided whether to accept. WAFB
television in Baton Rouge and WWL television in New Orleans both
cited unidentified sources in their reports. LSU sent an airplane
to Lansing, Mich., to pick up Saban to bring him to campus Monday
evening, WAFB reported. LSU's sports information office said they
could not confirm the reports. WLNS-TV in Lansing reported Monday
that officials at Michigan State have given Saban permission to
speak with LSU about the opening there. Spartan player Amp
Campbell told WLNS after a team meeting Monday evening that Saban
told them he was going home to discuss the matter with his family
before making a final decision.

SEC CHIEF SAYS FUMBLE CALL LOOKS LIKE A MISTAKE

(AP) - A controversial fumble call in the Georgia-Georgia Tech
game looks like a mistake, the supervisor for SEC football
official says. Bobby Gaston said Sunday he had not reviewed the
game tape nor had he spoken to officials from Georgia. But after
watching several replays of the play on television and speaking
with members of the officiating crew, he said his officials
messed up. "It certainly appears from the coverage on local
stations that (Jasper Sanks) was down," Gaston said. "We're all
sad today. It's not a happy day for us." No. 21 Georgia was 2
yards from the Georgia Tech goal line in the closing minute of
Saturday's game. Georgia, having rallied from a 17-point deficit,
sent Sanks into a pile. The ball popped loose. Chris Young picked
it up for the No. 17 Yellow Jackets with five seconds left,
preserving a 48-48 tie and forcing overtime. Tech won 51-48.
