Even the PMs are available--i.e. stored somewhere. I had spoken about that situation with Jill Munden recently out of curiosity. It is a somewhat murky situation, as companies can't be asked to keep all these exchanges in perpetuity, in case of a lawsuit (i.e. the SEC), but I was recently able to retrieve a 6-month old PM, not one I had filed, by retrieving a more recent reference to it that I had filed, and clicking on the "who wrote." And the old PM came up--so it is obviously still on their server. On the other hand, I believe SI does keep them actively stored for 30 days, and I'm not sure if this is for legal reasons or not.

The New Yorker had a nice opener piece about email yesterday. "Online life is, in the end, a life of aphorsims and bons mots, unhinged attacks and quick compliments."
