Raising Hell..... >>What disappoints me is that the real innovative ideas in the company, that, IMHO, have the ability to truly make Novell shine in the Internet world, are destroyed by politics and politicians inside the company. I would love to see things change, and I still see numerous ways that Novell could succeed ... but the employees in key places have to think of the company ... not themselves. It's not about someone getting credit for their idea ... it's about seeing the right ideas completed as products and out to market ... building a foundation for future products and development. It not about "doing what the customer asks for" (Did anyone else read the Metcalf article in MIT Tech Journal?) but instead delivering the right solution which fits into a strategy, and encompasses the customers needs. It's also about some amount of risk ... something which a lot of employees are just to chicken to take ... IMHO. ;-) Scott C. Lemon>> Hello Scott: And a happy belated Thanksgiving and Holiday season to fellow encrusted Novellians. Spoken like a true revolutionary Scott. Outside looking in provides the best seat in this New Virtual House the Internet's building everyday. If you are "inside" you should be wondering why your're not "outside" for all the energy, action and growth is about "being outside" these days. It's as if we're able to purchase our own box seats right at the finish line with the betting window, drinks, food and tape replay at tableside. Don't the trainers and owners sit in the Jockey Club and aren't the jockey's supposed to play to the crowd? One BIG open network, many people to talk to, races to judge and horses to bet on. And a nice sunny day, too boot. The question is: How do you get those who still think races are fixed to sweat? How do we make the Old Guard - Novell's polical insiders - sweat? Answer: Place a virtual stake in the groud. Begin right here. Organize mindshare among clients, developers and investors. For Novell to be at $21 1/2 is a travesty. There's a deep cancer inside Novell which has to be rooted out. The only way this is going to change is to find the source of the cancer, right down to naming names and taking numbers. I would like to invite all of you to visit www.zoomerang.com and start your own survey on anything that interests you. Market Tools has come up with a really neat product which I think will prove very powerful. We started an IP Telecom - VoIP - Survey last week for investors, customers, developers, etc. who use a variety of VoIP platforms. Go to....iptelecomsurvey.com and check it out. Fantastic tool which is very empowering for people can design their own surveys on the fly and shoot them off to leaders in various verticals. We are very excited about what's happening in the world of IP Telecom and VoIP. It's interesting to note that NDS is starting to find its way into this world. But these things take time. What Eric needs is to assert his leadership even among the old rank and file within Novell's core development ranks. I think some of the Old Guard has been moving into a vacuum left by recently departed execs. This is the time when Novell and the NDS story should be WHITE HOT inside the Internet scene. Why? Because the entire Internet will be completely and totally unbundled as we know it today. Instead of going to portals or company websites, portals and companies will be coming to us. Instead of trying to find things, a growing range of automated apps and systems will be finding them for us - with the answers delivered right up on a little virtual silver PDA/PCS platter. Instead of having to go anywhere to go on errands, the entire world of the near future will be dying to deliver anything/anywhere/anytime to our doorstep. And I can see the day when we will all be going in mass to our local/national Post Offices and - like Martin Luther - nailing a list of all the companies we DO NOT and NEVER want to receive junk mail from EVER again. In place of be junk-mailed to death we will present a small targeted/permissioned list of a few companies which we will say "Ok" to receive mail, etc. I can see the day when the phone number we list in the White Pages will be ONLY an inert voicemail box number which doesn't go anywhere. Between Caller ID blocks and this telemarketers will be reaching for a lower and lower common denominator. There will always be a vast portion of society which will always simply say "who cares" or "they can have my data" etc. But the way I see things quickly taking shape is in the area of permission and access to people, groups, networks, etc. The Old Business model fed from the trough of easy/sloppy unaware consumers who were totally oblivious to being tracked/measured/weighed/etc. like so much cattle. But what's happening very rapidly right now - and will accelerate very rapidly from here on out - is that traditional companies are losing their direct relationships with their clients to a new breed of network savvy, facillitation-happy, catalyst-friendly individuals and networks inside these growing DOT.COM data store networks. I still see Novell and NDS as a massively viral model. Each person someone, somewhere, sometime - or a group of people acting in concert somewhere, sometime must band together to form the beginnings of an network-crazy inspired NDS world community in which customers, developers, companies and DOT.COM networks all work together to discover, articulate, consolidate, factor, aggregate, expand and leverage the who/what/when/where/how and why behind individuals, groups, networks, skillsets, backgrounds, resources, tools, etc. The skills needed to get people excited about joining hands to launch this next phase will need to be widely diverse. The energy needed to get people excited about sharing, collaborating and providing basic support information will be massive. There needs to be a worldwide NDS tribe which carries these stakes, these torches and lights various fires which challenge the status quo. Scott, you are in the catbird seat. And I'm right there with you. Go to go for now. But do keep carrying the flame. Peace. GO!!
