I just had an interesting telephone conversation with the CFO of ODI. She tells me that her company seldom runs into VSNT in competitive situations and she hadn't "heard that name for a long time". She says that for years people were forecasting the Object Oriented Database market as a $1B dollar market but that now it is understood to be a $100M dollar market. Since her company did $62M in sales in '98 she says they own most of the market and they see it as a small but cash flow positive business (for them). While she says the technology is not one that is going away the size of the market and the growth of the market are small in her opinion.

Any thoughts??

Yes ODIS and VSNT are both doing rather poorly. I agree totally that there is plenty of room for both companies to succeed.

It's just in this particular case, VSNT now has no sales presence at all in Australia so far as I am aware, while ODIS has a solid presence. My company develops software using ODBMS and VSNT having no local presence makes it much less likely that I'll choose their product.

I wonder how many other countries there are where VSNT (or ODIS) have shut-down their sales office?
