Panasonic and Sierra Wireless Join Forces to Offer New Integrated Mobile Solution
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 30, 1999--Sierra Wireless(TSE:SW. - news)

Life Gets Easier For Mobile Workers As Panasonic TOUGHBOOK Now Comes With Built-In Wireless Modems from Sierra Wireless

Panasonic Canada Inc. and Sierra Wireless Inc. of Richmond, B.C., announced today that they have teamed up to integrate a new built-in wireless modem into Panasonic's TOUGHBOOK CF-27 computer.

``More and more people are taking their computers on the road for work and they need to be able to connect to remote networks, including the Internet,' said Stan Gray, Marketing Manager, Computer Systems, Panasonic Canada. ``In the past, you had to use adaptors to connect through your cell phone and connections could be fragile at times. But with the modem from Sierra Wireless built right into the TOUGHBOOK, connecting is now as simple as a click of the mouse.'

Gray said Panasonic teamed up with Sierra Wireless because of its expertise in wireless data communications as well as the ruggedness of its product, which he said is as sturdy as the TOUGHBOOK, which features a magnesium-alloy LCD case and shock damped hard disk for durability. All TOUGHBOOKs meet the military specs for drop shock, vibration, dust and liquid resistance. Panasonic sales reps routinely push the TOUGHBOOK off a desk or spill coffee on its keyboard as demonstrations of its ruggedness.

``We are pleased that our wireless modems are integrated into the TOUGHBOOK,' said Jeff Morris, Director of Marketing, Sierra Wireless. ``The mobile workforce demands a complete solution that's tough enough to survive the roughest environment, and deliver wireless connectivity. This new wireless integrated solution meets these requirements.'

Morris adds that the built-in wireless capabilities of the TOUGHBOOK CF-27 are already popular with police forces. This integrated solution opens new opportunities for field service, dispatch, remote networking and many other applications.

The TOUGHBOOK 27 features a fully integrated, internally powered, SB300 OEM module (wireless modem) from Sierra Wireless. It supports the most efficient and cost effective wireless communications technology used today, CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data), currently offered by TELUS Mobility, Sasktel Mobility, MTS Mobility and the Aliant Network. The modem is supported by a compact Panasonic-developed H.O.T.(TM) (``High-Gain, Omni-Directional, Telescopic') antenna. For user flexibility, the wireless capability can be integrated from initial delivery or easily upgraded at a later date.
