o/t WTO Update from Seattle

I just came from downtown Seattle and the situation is very very tense. My office has closed as have many in the core. Entire blocks are being cordoned off by police. Some of you may have heard that tear gas is being deployed to disperse protesters. It is actually OC pepper spray, but it is indeed being used liberally at some intersections. Smallish bands of young-ish appearing dudes are running through the streets although no one seems bent on causing harm or even property damage. Police are in full riot gear however, and many are mounted on horseback. They are conceding some intersections and holding the line at others. I hear that quite a few WTO delegates have been physically restrained by protestors, a group of endangered turtle people apparently, from entering the Convention Center where proceedings have yet to get underway. The AFL-CIO march is set to begin in a few hours and I suspect that will bring many thousands more into the fray. Wow. History is being made in Seattle today.
