Gottfried - I agree the article was remarkable for having little or no substance. I took more away by what wasn't said - i.e. an inference that WDC had nothing worth buying than anything else.

The advancements of technology in areal density have had an effect, but there have also been fantastic growth in the size of storage needs. I think when Windows 2000 comes out February 17, 2000 that will be the biggest thing to effect the size of hard disk requirements. INTC and AMD should be up to 1,000 Megaherz processor speed, but so far the speed of processors and UltraDMA33 and 66 haven't caused much of a bump up in prices.

Broadband and high speed internet access seems to be going real slow. I know a lot of people still stuck at 56k who are just waiting for DSL or Cable Access that hasn't been rolled out in their area.

Tivio and WebTV might have the most promise of driving storage needs. After all, wouldn't you want high quality recordings and maybe have many shows/games stored at a time. Which seems to me that large hard drives and fast data transfer times are going to be required. Maybe even larger hard drives than the ones sold with the average consumer computer.
