<what can anyone do in this area that Microsoft can't?>

Microsoft is constrained by the need to maintain a legacy stream of extant revenues. If they match NuoMedia's business model, they will suffer a compression in share price short to medium term. I am not saying they will not do this, but it is a barrier to entry of sorts.

<Microsoft is already moving into these areas>
They are issuing press releases in these areas.

<both web-served apps and thin-client computing are fundamental enough that they will be incorporated into the desktop paradigm>

The momentum is in the other direction. WANs incorporate Desktop functionality.

<how can these companies prosper when Microsoft commoditizes these technologies>

I cannot speak for other companies, but Microsoft cannot afford to commoditize our business model. The war is not won on the technology from, but the strategy front.

<In Y2000, it will be possible to buy a Wintel-free PC which offers essentially the same or better early-user experience than Windows + Office.>

This is not likely. MSFT's products are the most robust, but the depth of functionality offered by these products are ignored by the vast majority of end users. This is the reason why WAN apps pose such as threat.
