WTO update no. 3 The National Guard (unarmed) is being called in to provide additional tactical support in the downtown area. Tacoma is sending 50 deputies. Eastern Washington counties are sending additional reinforcements for the Seattle Police. The mayor has declared a 'civil emergency' and set a curfew for quite a large area of downtown from 7:00 pm to sunrise. From what I can see, the damage to retail storefronts has been widespread and substantial. Litter and spraypaint graffiti are everywhere. Clouds of teargas fill the major intersections. Dumpsters are overturned, trees uprooted, etc. The police are moving with aggression, some on horseback and others in lines 3-4 deep, to move protesters out of the core area. I saw police in riot gear riding on the outside of an armored personnel carrier with weapons drawn. Others are shooting tear gas, concussion grenades, pepper spray, and rubber bullets at groups of protesters. Some groups are picking up the live canisters and lobbing them back at the police. President Clinton arrives tonight at 1:00 am. Senator Tom Hayden (what a joke) is already here and appearing on live television. This is like nothing we have seen in this country in a long long time folks. It is raining steadily.
