Full Speed Ahead With Sun's Second Starfire Production Line Starfire Manufacturing Capacity Doubles to Meet Intense Customer Demand PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Keeping pace with swelling demand for its Sun Enterprise(TM) 10000 server (aka Starfire(TM)), Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW) recently doubled manufacturing capacity by opening a second Starfire production line, this one housed at the company's Newark, Calif., manufacturing plant. Fully operational since August of this year, the Newark line complements an existing Starfire production line located in Beaverton, Ore. The Starfire production line at Newark accounts for approximately 20 percent of that facility's square footage. The added manufacturing muscle helps Sun to achieve the rapid order fulfillment vital to its mission-critical customers. In addition, the boosted capacity is creating economies of scale that make price breaks of as much as 15-18 percent possible, depending on configuration. "We understand that our customers frequently have urgent needs for additional computing equipment -- that is the nature of the data center, where our Starfire system is extensively deployed," said Clark Masters, vice president and general manager, Data Center and High Performance Computing Products Group, Sun Microsystems. "We are doubling our Starfire manufacturing capability so we can continue to deliver the top-quality products our customers expect from us, in the time frame they need." To help its customers meet urgent computing equipment needs in the unpredictable data center environment, Sun also recently introduced the new PowerExpress program. This fast-delivery option is designed to have pre-configured, pre-tested Starfire systems and components shipped to customers in as few as two weeks. For system boards, the order fulfillment time can be as short as two days. About the Sun Enterprise 10000 Server The mainframe-class Sun Enterprise 10000, or Starfire, server provides up to eight Dynamic System Domains; Sun is the only UNIX(R) platform vendor to offer this feature.
