Rumorwatch: DoCoMo To Buy Hutchison Stake
By a staff reporter
30 November 1999
The telecoms industry is beset with rumors, many tantalizing, most unfounded. Rumorwatch is an occasional service from Total Telecom designed to keep you updated with the latest significant gossip.

The rumor:
NTT is about to buy a stake in Hutchison Telecommunications Ltd. The Japanese mobile company will pay around HK$5 billion ($643.8 million) for 29% of the Hong Kong based mobile operator.

Currently, Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. holds 70% of Hutchison Telephone. Motorola Inc. has the remaining stake.

First spotted:
Today's edition of the Ming Pao newspaper, Hong Kong. Also reported in Reuters.

Background
There were rumors in February, also started by the Ming Pao, that DoCoMo was on the verge of purchasing a 20-30% stake in SmarTone Mobile Communications, also of Hong Kong. It didn't happen.

Official comment:
An NTT DoCoMo spokeswoman (to Reuters): "We do not comment on speculation".
