Aha! For some reason there is a much stronger feeling of-- well- what? respect?- fear?- boundaries? for men? Ish asked what women would do if a man used a women's room (of course he posed this in typical Ishlike terms). I THINK if there were several of us we'd laugh. And beat him up with our pocketbooks. If however, a woman were alone, she would leave quickly because the threat of rape is all too present in our lives. I don't know about most women, but embarrassment would not be my reaction. In some ways, I think women are earthier than men. Not to be confused with adolescent, teeheeing, dirty joke, bad word behavior, but with the real nitty gritty of life. Not too many men have gone through gyn exams year after year, or giving birth, or using a bathroom with your own and the neighbor's kids watching you, or having weird accidents like leaking milk in the grocery store at the cry of some other baby. Really, my body is sort of a nonissue. As are birth, death and sickness. These are women's arenas- or at least they used to be when I was growing up in the south. I don't mean that men are incapable, Ish has certainly taken on the yeoman's task these past couple of weeks. But in general, men let women do the hospital, funeral, wedding, babybirthin' stuff. Or maybe I am showing my age here. This may be completely different now. Well, I bet the younger guys THINK it is different. I bet my HUSBAND thought it once, but would now admit that things are as they've always been. Once I got into bed with my parents and threw up on my father and the first words out of his mouth, after "oh SHIT!" were "Marion!!!!"
