calling in the national guard in seattle...getting crazy up there

It's been a strange day here. My office is at the south end of downtown, some distance from the main demonstrations. We didn't have any problems. Folks who work in the area of the demonstrations had trouble getting to work, however, because demonstrators made a concerted effort to block intersections and even building entrances. I have a hard time understanding how people can justify interfering with peoples' daily lives that way. The cost in lost productivity for business and lost sales for retailers is huge.

Some of the demonstrations went off without a problem - the organized labor groups for example. There were, however, groups who seemed intent on causing trouble. Windows of a number of stores were broken and the FAO Schwartz bear was vandalized. From what I've seen, the police gave a fairly measured response in dealing with the demonstrators.

Tomorrow will be interesting. The President is coming to town, and security will be ramped up even more.
