AltaVista plans $5 billion-plus flotation- FT

Reuters Story - December 01, 1999 07:11

LONDON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - U.S. Internet firm AltaVista Co is planning a flotation next March which would value it at more than $5 billion, the Financial Times newspaper said on Wednesday.

The FT also said AltaVista and majority share holder CMGI Inc have had talks about an AltaVista/Lycos tie-up.

CMGI, which paid COMPAQ Computer Corp $2.3 billion over the summer for its 83 percent stake in AltaVista, owns 17 percent of fellow Internet search engine firm Lycos Inc .

The FT said there had been no talks between AltaVista and Lycos, and noted CMGI had tried to buy control of Lycos earlier this year.

It quoted Altavista chief executive Rod Schrock as saying consolidation among the myriad of search engines and other Internet portal sites was inevitable.
