Corel on the acquisition trail

Not necessarily good news. Unlike the sillyvalley companies with funny money shares & few prospects of earnings, good chance CORL's buyups would dilute real earnings and shares. I hope just because CORL is starting to trade like a Redhot, MC doesn't mistakenly believe CORL is RHAT.

[BTW, among CNBC's snide comments on CORL this morning was a new label for those who have objected to their coverage -- "Coreleans" -- sounds like a Startrek species. Anybody wake up with horns or strange new growths on their heads this morning?]

Linux lovers join forces for software battle
...In an interview yesterday, Cornell said he backs a claim made earlier this week by Corel chief executive Michael Cowpland that revenues from Linux products could quickly accelerate to reach the same point as sales of Windows-based products.

"That's what we're hoping for. That's the target," he said. "This is such a rapidly changing marketplace. An erosion of the Microsoft world could happen very quickly."

A study by International Data Corp. projects that the Linux desktop OS market could double in the next several years, from a 2.1% share to 4.7% by 2003.

Clash Of The Titans
Anti-Microsoft Forces Split On Remedies
...A breakup "would be a big mistake," said Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive of Ottawa-based Corel Corp., another competitor. Corel considers transparent pricing controls and elimination of cross-bundling/licensing to be sufficient remedies to level the playing field. "The market wouldn't be any better off. There would only be several pseudo-monopolies instead," Cowpland said...

From the article:
Corel denies Red Hat rumours
By Gabriel Landriault, Computer Dealer News

According to Avner Mandelman, a partner with Toronto-based Giraffe Capital Management, even though Corel is in the black after a two year restructuring process, the company would not be an easy takeover.

"They didn't set themselves up as an acquisition target, they basically fixed the company," he said. "If someone wants to take a run at them there's a soft poison pill in place. Basically that you can't just take 51 per cent of the company then steal the product and leave the other 49 per cent holding the bag..."

...Mandelman believes Corel could be the technology stock of the decade.
