Nationwide, child molesters know that before they put a hand on a child, their life will be ruined. I see no harm in a Megan's law in Mass.

A man was recently arrested for attempting to molest a child here in Northern Virginia ~ the event happened at a health club, and the man who was arrested did not physically resemble the real perpetrator at all, but had a similar name, and was also a member of the club. His family and employer stood by him, but I am sure it must have been very difficult for him. He has a position of responsibility, and a good income, which allowed him to be able to hire an excellent local attorney to help him fight the charges.

<<And what about the cases in which it is discovered afterward that the person had not, in
fact, molested any child? Even though innocent, the person's life could be ruined.>>

Isn't this pretty rare, Edwarda? The victim is usually a witness (unless the molester kills him/her) and there is usually DNA evidence, and child molesters are almost always repeat offenders. Although there have been several attempts, there has been no reliable treatment developed which works, so it makes sense that the community know who they are in order to protect themselves and their families.

I am all for freedom and everything, but the need to protect children from predators seems to be a more important societal goal.
