Papazitto,

You can always despair the money you missed making. Who could have known that AOL would rise like that? It looks like you cleared a healthy $60 large. Nothing to sneeze at. With the information available at the time was taking the profit a bad idea? You're up for your investment.

When Apple was at 17 I looked at it but chose to buy two other stocks. I liked Apple, and had a strong feeling they would survive. I'm way ahead on one of these choices and the other tanked. Today I could be crying because AAPL is over 100. How could I have known? The one stock I bought that did well was PHTN. Got in at 2.5, it's at 38 today (I took my lumps and wrote off the other one). I've resolved that, DD aside, you can't know the whole story or make flawless decisions. With the way the market is today if you don't do DD you might as well be in Vegas.

Dumb joke- Two guys are hunting in the woods. One says to the other, 'if you see bear run as fast as you can'. The other says, 'you can't outrun a bear'. The first quips, 'I may not be able to outrun the bear, but I can outrun you'.

Take solace in the fact that you are making money while other schmoes are out there in the same woods being 'lunch for the bear'.

I agree that fear is a motivator..so is greed. These threads are great to read and I learn from some of them.My philosophy is different. Take strong long positions on leaders, csco, brcm, emc aol etc. The equity buildup is so strong I can "Fire and Forget".I am not a day trader, only make 3-5 trades a year. About 25%,of portfolio is out there looking for the next Juniper Networks so I can put them in the "Fire & Forget" box behind the ice cubes in the freezer.
My primary motivator with this technique,is that I HATE Capital Gains Tax!It should be outlawed,it's double taxation. The first Presidential candidate that says they are going to due away with Capital Gains gets my $$ and support!
By the way, I made the same mistake you did on Ascend Communications when Lucent announced they were going to purchase,I left $20.00 per share on the table!
