Most of the SE Asian countries are very "schizo". For instance in Thailand, any sort of derogatory remark about the Royal Family is liable to subject you to physical violence. Education and chastity are highly valued but prostitution and political cronyism/graft are ingrained in the culture. Its hard to appreciate just how different things are unless you've been there.
