Japan's Desktop PC Sales Reach High Level in 1st Week of Nov.
December 1, 1999 (TOKYO) -- PC retail sales in Japan in the first week of November have seen double-digit growth from the previous week, due to new models being launched by major PC makers.

Desktop PC sales in units reached as high a level as those of the winter of 1998 and the summer of 1999, when weekly sales peaked.

According to data collected by GfK Japan Ltd., Japan's PC sales in the first week of November (Nov. 1-7) at about 2,000 such retail stores rose 14.1 percent in units and 14.9 percent in value compared with the previous week.

GfK is an information service company dealing with POS data of 55 household electric appliance retail stores.

The average sales price rose 1,407 yen to 204,133 yen from 202,726 yen a week earlier. (104.12 yen = US$1)

Due to a weekend shopping spree and the Japanese holiday in the first week of November, sales increased substantially. Yet because sales swelled in that week, a negative week-on-week growth is expected to occur in the following week.

Under the prevailing trend toward low-priced PCs, the average price has leveled off even after new models are launched.

In the last year the average price has risen by as much as 10,000 yen just after the winter models launched. This year, the average price of desktop PCs is leveling off.

GfK Japan collects POS data from 55 IT-related retail sales companies centering on high-volume stores specializing in home electric appliances. It covers about 3,200 stores (as of April 1998) throughout Japan.

In cooperation with GfK Japan, Nikkei Market Access provides weekly reports of PC sales in volume and value.

The sales data has been based on the same 41 companies (with about 2,000 stores) since April 1996.

The number of PCs sold at the 2,000 stores is estimated to comprise about 10 percent of gross domestic shipments, and when limiting the sales to retail sales channels, the share comes to about 25 percent of such shipments.
