True story re. social conscience v. law. An American living with his family in Tokyo, made a point of refusing to pay some sort of tax/contribution (?) on his television sets to support NHK.

He thought he was quite the righteous hero for not doing something the GOJ "wanted" him to do. Turned out his neighbors had paid the "contribution" for him -- wanted to avoid shame for the neighborhood.
