from the beginning they were set to do well as gorillas?

I knew several people at IBM who worked closely with Microsoft in the early days. Microsoft was in a position much like Rambus is with Intel. IBM controlled their future and told them what their next products would be. It was not until the break over OS/2 and Windows did Microsoft get it's fate into it's own hands.
