Re"antidepressants": I think we are forgetting something here. And that is that the existence of neurotransmitters was discovered only about ten years ago. In view of the fact that neurotransmitters have been found to play the key role in mental illness, the discovery has revolutionized the treatment of mental illness.

The old-fashioned knock-em-out drugs like Thorazine did not act on neurotransmitters; the newer ones, like Prozac, are designed to.

One of my brothers has diagnosed as a "paranoid schizophrenic" years ago; he has spent practically his entire adult life in and out of mental hospitals. I have to say that the change in his medication -- from Thorazine to Lithium + neurotransmitter activators -- has also dramatically changed his life for the better (and has also indicated he may have been misdiagnosed from the outset!).

Of course, psychopharmacology has a long way to go yet. But, IMO, it is going in the right direction.
