Re WTO

Aggie, things are much quieter today. I am in the office now but leaving shortly. There is a distinct "military" presence in the downtown core now that the National Guard has shown up with Humvees, etc... The police are still on tactical alert and SWAT squads are taking aggressive measures to ensure the protesters get nowhere near the Convention Center. Many storefronts were boarded up last night, but much of the litter and battle debris of yesterday has been removed. It is tense but a sense of control and calm is returning. A band of protestors was encircled near my office and ordered to disperse and leave the area. Those who refused and sat down were arrested and led to waiting buses. There have been scattered and isolated instances of mild police force (tear gas) but nothing like yesterday. Overall, the police seem to be using commendable restraint today while projecting impressive force.

A light rain is falling but President Clinton seems to be sticking to his scheduled appearances.
