Depends on the person who is growing older, but a lot of older Americans are selfish- a lot of ALL AMericans are selfish- we have a culture of selfishness. Look at all the Elderly Americans who are enraged at the thought of their social security or medicare benefits being reduced- even though they are taking out more than they put in - they are stealing from their children and grandchildren and they don't care. All those bumper stickers "I'm spending my kids inheritance"- it is so true.

Because this is a supremely capitalist country at the moment it BEHOOVES everyone to be bred to be selfish. Selfish people are better consumers. And what we are raising in this country is consumers.

As I said, that was Aristotle's belief ~ I will have to post the quotation from Aristotle later, as I am presently at the office. As I recall, he was talking not about people in their prime, but people whom we would now call "senior citizens." The man who goes on three legs, to paraphrase the riddle of the Sphinx.
