Parametric Technology Corporation Wins INDUSTRYWEEK Technology of the Year Award; Pro/ENGINEER Behavioral Modeling Honored for Innovative Technological Content

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 2, 1999--Parametric Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:PMTC) today announced that its Pro/ENGINEER Behavioral Modeling software has received a Technology of the Year Award from INDUSTRYWEEK in the magazine's annual Technology and Innovation Award competition. Behavioral Modeling was honored for its unique ability to solve engineering problems within a computer-aided design (CAD) environment.

"This is the third time PTC has received INDUSTRYWEEK's Technology and Innovation Award in the past seven years," said Jim Baum, executive vice president, engineering, research and development, PTC. "We believe this recognition is evidence of our continued commitment to provide our customers with new and innovative technology to enable flexible engineering. Behavioral Modeling is a key technology that our customers are deploying as part of their engineering knowledge-management strategies."

INDUSTRYWEEK's Technology and Innovation Award competition celebrates outstanding achievement in technology and honors products that show high potential for redirecting business opportunities and creating new growth in the manufacturing world. Entries were judged on the predicted impact of the technology on users, the trickle-down effect on related industries and projected dollar-value market impact. Other winners of this year's competition include IBM, Lucent Technologies and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. For a complete list of the winners and a profile of each winning technology, see the December 6 issue of INDUSTRYWEEK or visit www.industryweek.com/tech&innovation.

About Pro/ENGINEER and Behavioral Modeling

More than 230,000 users worldwide leverage PTC's software for the design, engineering, manufacturing and support of their products. PTC's premier solution for design and engineering is Pro/ENGINEER, which now features next-generation Behavioral Modeling technology. Behavioral Modeling is a unique, patent-pending knowledge-management technology that automatically solves engineering problems. Companies use Behavioral Modeling to capture the innovation and unique problem-solving abilities of their engineers right in the CAD model, then automatically synthesize the optimal result.

The objective-driven design capability conveniently enables design engineers to ask and receive answers to "what if" questions throughout the design process. Such ease of design exploration yields products that are highly creative, more differentiable and more responsive to customer requirements. The ability to easily define the problem with an optimal solution allows engineers to solve tough design scenarios, without the need for time-consuming manual iterations or the requirement of assistance from analysts or specialists.

To drive innovation and as part of a company's total knowledge-management strategy all behavioral models can be indexed and made available to all engineers through an "innovation portal" managed by PTC's Windchill collaborative product commerce software.

thanks, Bob. Would a simple-minded analogy be that if one thinks of tag-switching as addresses on envelopes, XML would be code identifying the contents of the envelopes?

Also, this sounds like a standards-based effort, not the proprietary work of any one company. Is that correct?
