Elmer,
RE:"They wouldn't, besides they can keep gullible people like you believing they can release a 1 GHz part any time they want to."...

Now Elmer, that's not nice. I never said AMD could release a 1 GHz Athlon anytime they wanted too...I don't think they need to right now.
Best thing to do is release the slowest chip you can and still maintain a speed grade or two lead on the poor old Floppermine.
Yields should be better on the lower speed chip and profits higher...
You know, like Intel used to do it!

RE:"AMD has so much trouble doing ondie L2 they have to create a new part, the K6-2+ with only 128K ondie L2. Obviously they are K63s that won't work with 256K L2. If AMD could put the L2 on the Athlon they would have already."

First of all, the Athlon doesn't need an on die L2 to get to 1 GHZ. A good supply of faster L2 cache will help.
I thought you had learned something about the roadmap for Athlon but apparently not. The Athlon was brought to fruition using the lowest common denominators. One of these was the off die L2. Had AMD put the L2 in die, the die would have been way to big on .25u and they never would have been able to release it when they did or get good yields.
They key is they got it on the market...with good yields.
As far as the K6-2+ being a K6-III with half the L2 disabled...well I don't know...but I do remember that the original K6-2+ was supposedly going to be the K6-III with all the L2 disabled...
