What if the Yahoo's develop kickass broadband content and you are stuck with Excite 3D Weather? You just hit on exactly why you don't want the medium to be married to the content creator. In my business it is proven over and over again that the "in house" photographer will never produce the cutting edge work. He or she will produce work acceptable for internal uses, but for the good stuff you have to go to the freelancers. These freelance guys and gals are hungry, they don't make it if they aren't constantly striving for the most creative output. The guy with the regular paycheck gets fat and sloppy pretty fast. You should see the sullen stares you get from the in house guy when you arrive on the job. They hate the freelancers, but, they're too scared to hang their butt out there themselves because of the risk of failure. I would hazard to guess where there is no risk of failure, you will never get a creative result. By avoiding the market place and going for the steady paycheck, they guarantee that they will do nothing but the most mediocre projects. It's equally bad from the companies side. The guy isn't working out but they feel compelled to use him. The outside guy makes a day rate equal to what the regular guy gets in a month. The company wants to save money. They want to control the result, this in house guy will do exactly what they say to do, therefore they never get anything better than what they can think up on their own. The freelancer will listen to the company and then take off from there adding their own experience and skill set. If you are going to work with creative you have to let them do their job, to surprise you, to fail. You can't always get what you want... you get what you need.
