Legato Systems and Network Appliance Deliver Industry's First Application High Availability Solution for Network Attached Storage
Ericsson Reports Continuous Availability of Mission-Critical Application Services

Palo Alto and Sunnyvale, CA - November 30, 1999 -- Legato® Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:LGTO - news), the leader in enterprise storage management software and Network Appliance®, Inc (NASDAQ:NTAP - news), the leading provider of network-attached data access and management solutions, today announced the first comprehensive application availability solution for network-attached storage (NAS). In this solution, Legato® Cluster provides clients with continuous access to critical applications and NetApp® Clustered Failover software provides fail-safe access to business critical data stored on NetApp filers. Customers using this solution gain continuous availability of mission-critical application services, while deploying a highly available, dynamically scalable and easy-to-manage storage infrastructure.

NetApp and Legato partnered in January 1998 to deliver data availability and data protection software solutions. Today's announcement provides the first high availability application failover solution for NAS to the enterprise marketplace. Legato and NetApp are committed to providing customers with highly available data management solutions that are extremely reliable and simple to manage.

"At Ericsson worldwide, 32,000 licenses of a mission-critical configuration management application are being used," said Robert Ikenberg, DT/IT application manager at Ericsson Mobile Communications, a leading global provider of telecommunications solutions. "Continuous access to this and other applications and data is a critical requirement. With the combined NetApp/Legato solution, we can now do planned server maintenance with no interruption to end-user productivity and unplanned server downtime is virtually eliminated. Additionally, our backup and restore time is now dramatically improved and transparent to users."

Legato Cluster is the first high availability solution to enable Fortune 2000 customers to proactively manage service-level availability on UNIX® and Windows NT® application servers. It ensures applications, data and resources remain available to users during planned events like system tuning, as well as unplanned events like load fluctuations and system failure. Legato Cluster enables IT organizations to proactively prevent application and system failures, to optimize system operations and to continuously tune applications without compromising service levels.

NetApp Clustered Failover software provides a fail-safe data service to UNIX, Windows and Web network clients and application servers. It provides a transparent, automated failover capability and enhances the highly available, dynamically scalable and easy-to-manage data service inherent in NetApp's systems.

"This class of comprehensive availability, that guarantees access to data and applications through planned as well as unplanned downtime, is the type of solution that our enterprise customers like Ericsson are demanding," said Jim Chappell, senior vice president, Legato Systems. "Legato Cluster was certified to work with Network Appliance's NAS products with no change to our standard product, proving that Legato Cluster's design is architecture-independent. This means that our customers can take immediate advantage of the storage architecture of their choice and preserve their investment in Legato Cluster."

"Legato Cluster adds continuous information availability solutions to our combined Legato-Network Appliance product offering," said Larry Kubo, vice president of marketing at Network Appliance. "This new data availability solution not only provides high availability to mission-critical applications, but it also simplifies overall management and improves network performance through the addition of network attached storage."

Several Legato Cluster and NetApp filer configurations were certified to provide a range of comprehensive high-availability solutions for UNIX and Windows NT application users:
Legato Cluster can be installed on Unix or Windows NT application servers that use a NetApp filer for their data repository. Legato Cluster can support a virtually unlimited number of servers, to enable customers to use as many application servers as they need to ensure application availability and service level agreements. In the event that an application or application server fails, NetApp filers continue to provide data service to all active applications. The filers are also immediately available to provide data service as soon as Legato Cluster restarts the failed applications.

Legato Cluster can be installed on Unix or Windows NT application servers that use a clustered pair of NetApp filers for their data repository. In this configuration, NetApp Clustered Failover software is enabled on the clustered filers. It ensures data availability in the event that one filer fails, by automatically and transparently switching data access requests over to the second filer. Legato Cluster keeps applications available on attached applications servers through data repository failures, by managing the connection to the NetApp filer.
Using this combined high availability solution, customers gain protection from downtime of their key enterprise application services, including ERP solutions such as SAP R3® , database solutions such as Oracle® , and E-business applications such as Microsoft® IIS or Netscape® Server. This solution is available for applications that support network attached storage.

"As the recent experiences of a number of e-commerce companies such as eBay, E*Trade, and AOL attest, downtime is a killer," states Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corp. "All companies are susceptible to application, network, storage and site-level outages. It is imperative that high availability solutions that include application failover plus data protection become a strategic component of continuous operations plan. The experience of IT managers is that failure to do so imperils your company."

Pricing and Availability
The application high availability solution is immediately available. Legato Cluster for applications servers is available from Legato Systems. Pricing for an entry-level, two-node Legato Cluster configuration starts at $6,000 for small workgroup systems and increases for larger enterprise data center environments. NetApp filers and Cluster Failover software are available from Network Appliance. Pricing is based on system configuration and starts at $28,000 for the F700 series filer. NetApp Clustered Failover software starts at $15,950.

Legato and Network Appliance have a long-standing joint selling relationship that is extended to include this combined solution. Customers are encouraged to contact either their Legato sales representative or Network Appliance sales representative to learn more about the benefits of the solution.
