Taiwan's UMC Group Invests Heavily to Expand Production
December 2, 1999 (TOKYO) -- UMC Group of Taiwan invested about US$2.4 billion to increase its wafer production to 25,000-40,000 wafers per month, the company said.

Production volume varies at its different plants.

Market conditions will be bright in 2000, and the company hopes to bolster its production, said Peter Chang, CEO of the group's Foundry Operations.

The most advanced 0.15-micron process technology will be employed. The group's "12A," a plant for 300mm wafers, will start production equivalent to 20,000 wafers a month from the fourth quarter of 2001, Chang said.
