When you buy stocks for listed at a few pennies per share you would need big gains to just break even because of the huge bid ask spread, high commission costs per share, and general illiquidity which means the price goes up when you buy and down when you sell. A lot of the apparent trades are actually tape painting.
I know you know this, but neophytes should stay away from penny stocks unless they have (illegal) inside information. The odds are against them.
