OT: "I heard the news today...OH BOY!!!

My daughter works in downtown Seattle.
The office building she works in is right on the edge of the WTO mess!

Yesterday she went downtown, and her office had closed for the day, due to the mass demonstration and marches. She saw some of those (only a dozen or so) black-hooded & masked out-of-town PUNKS (who rampaged through Seattle yesterday doing most of the vandalism and terrorizing people). She saw them with crowbars break the windows out of a building right next to her building.

Ironically, one of her best friends came to Seattle (from Washington DC) and is working for the World Trade Organization (WTO), and another of her best friends was one of the "peaceful" demonstrators concerned about the WTO's policies regarding world-wide fair labor practices, human rights concerns, and environmental policies. My daughter's kinda like her dad in the 60's. Half my friends were hippies, and the other half were conservative business majors. I always found my values somewhere in between both extremes, trying to "understand" all "legitimate" points of view (still do).

Anyway, my daughter just called me with today's news from the "frontlines." She went to work today by bus (with tear-gas going off today & tonight right next to her building). It was like a war zone, with riot police everywhere downtown.

One story she told about today. Initially, when she got to work this morning (15 minutes after the end of the downtown "curfew") her office building was open for business. The rumors throughout her building was that "secret service" agents (or others) were stationed up on their roof.

Well, during the day a huge group to TOTALLY NAKED PROTESTORS started marching around her office building (I haven't seen that one on the news yet). My daughter said her building immediately went into a complete "lock-down" condition, and all the office workers rushed to the windows to watch.

My daughters comment,
"Well Dad, at least we could see that they didn't have any weapons"!!!

The only humor I've heard in this VERY SAD past few days for our wonderful and beautiful city. With some 30,000-50,000 peaceful demonstrators & WTO conference attendees, and yet just a handful of PUNK HOOLIGAN VANDALS & LOOTERS tried to ruin the freedoms we all cherish. Angry young people, who without doubt came from very abusive (and angry) family backgrounds. Even on the local news tonight downtown Seattle looks like something out of a Sc-Fi movie! It's unbelievably surreal. Riot police throughout our city, in streets usually filled with happy families this time of year, with festive Christmas & holiday lights and decorations everywhere. Very weird (and VERY SAD) to say the least.

Dear WTO,
next time. . .PLEASE pick another city for your conference!!! We want out "peaceful" city back.

Roger

PS. We're all just glad it's poured rained every day,
so they won't want to stay here.
