Wade,

I have heard people (some of them supposedly well educated personalities on National TV)say that who ever comes to market first (regardless of the quality of the product), will dominate, especially if they flood the market with cheap or (as in CSCO's plans) free hardware. This strategy may have worked for VHS and Beta, but this is a very unique situation.

First of all, there are techies out there that love their toys and are willing to pay the extra dollars to get what they want. That is why every few years or so, the techies snap up new PCs (more memory, more speed...) newer version of Windows, etc. I know this from first hand experience and friends and relatives.

Secondly, no one cares if you can provide me with a "NEW INTERNET" which does the same thing as the old internet, but only without the cable. All that means is I can watch jerky internet-video from my car instead of my basement.

What I think the public wants is the internet doors blown wide open with no more excuses for slow service from online brokers, banks, or entertainment sites (you know what I mean). With WIN tech, this can be done. The exchange of info between your PC and the server at the other end will be limited by the speed of the slowest of the two machines. Once this state is reached, you'll see Internet Service providers scrambling to set screaming sites to handle more people and more data.

I can see it now: Dingo with three monitors set up to his PC to watch RTQ, a football game, and surf at the same time; all from the net, in real time.

The problem is that there will not always be that freedom of choice, you will have to buy the equipment that works with your service provider. Remember that Cisco has a very large penetration in the IP market, employs proprietary elements to protocols and will give away equipment to maintain their presence. Our benefit is really in alliances with other giants such as Lucent.
Cisco is extremely predatory!
Long on WIN do not hold any Cisco, just pointing out the other side of the argument.
