Japan Semiconductor Show Opens With 1,506 Exhibitors
Thursday, December 2, 1999

(Anyone Know, if Intel or Rambus are there?)

TOKYO (Nikkei)--SEMICON Japan 99 opened Wednesday in Chiba Prefecture, with 1,506 semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment companies from 25 countries taking part.

The show, sponsored by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International, is expected to attract some 110,000 visitors through Friday. Its focus is on key topics in the industry, including next-generation lithography and equipment for 300mm wafers.

Japan is the single largest exhibitor, with 919 companies participating, up 2.2% from last year. The U.S. follows with 392 firms, down 8%. But South Korea's presence has grown, with its roster more than doubling to 15 companies.

According to SEMI, U.S. semiconductor equipment and materials companies are focusing more on South Korea and Taiwan because Japanese chipmakers have been curbing their capital spending over the past several years.
