The phone will either use the AT commands locally (like ATDT to dial) or it may deterjmine that it has to pass them along ot the modem at the other end. this last one I would suspect that the carrier would be real careful of what it would pass, but in IS-707 spec it allows for things like setting the S0, F0 registers in the remote modem for things like timeouts and line levels. Of all people I know that use modems, I think I can count on 2 fingers those that know enough to actually set them. Then to not have access to the line monitor hooked up to that modem, it would be tough.

What I meant about AOL is that they offer some other features which makes people want to use it, such as Chat, or classifieds, or other value added features.
