Thanks Christine... I actually don't know the details since I don't have children and I don't live in the city... however I was looking at houses in SF and these school issues came up and I was interested.

The discussion got off the track a little towards quotas in general, which have no bearing to Lowell, which is a high school, I know (we were talking about universities etc). But what I hear you saying is that straight A's in 8th grade gets you in (or puts you in a lottery) - is that right? Because that is actually more fair than any tests, since the students from the lower ranked schools can do well and yet continue to score poorly on std tests... it sounds like any tests are irrelevant here, is that your understanding? I'm ok with that then. I still think its best to have a heterogeneous student body though, however it gets done.
