If they really wanted
something done about their "causes", why not participate in the meetings instead of
making a fools of themselves?


Because the WTO won't let them. Despite years of protests, they have never been invited to the table, and have never been allowed to participate. I don't believe any NGO has ever been allowed to address the WTO on any issue of substance. I will be glad to have somebody point out to me if I am wrong, but so far nobody has been able to give me a single instance where a labor union or major environmental group representative has ever been allowed to address a plenary session or the WTO.
