First Union Lifts Sawtek To Strong Buy, Sees Opportunity (SAWS)
(NewsTraders.com)--Sawtek Inc. (SAWS) shares received a boost to "strong buy" from "buy" as First Union Securities analyst Mark Roberts stated that recent price weakness represents a compelling buying opportunity.
The analyst has a $59 price target on the stock, which closed yesterday at $41.25, after having fallen $4.38.

Roberts acknowledged that the weakness may be a result of investors' panic as a result of a recent conference call conducted with Analog Devices (ADI), which implied that Sawtek's SAW filters could become obsolete in light of Analog's direct conversion technology for CDMA, due by mid-2000.

The analyst contends that this does not represent a new threat, as companies have been working on such direct conversion technologies for years, and he believes that Sawtek is more defensible because of the growing complexity of wireless phones.

Roberts also pointed out that Analog is not a CDMA licensee, and said that Qualcomm (QCOM), which he considers a generation ahead of other companies in the segment, has indicated that it will not develop direct conversion technologies for some time.

Shares of the Apopka, Fla.-based producer of signal processing components using surface acoustic wave, or SAW, technology withstood unusually heavy volume yesterday as nearly 1.1 million shares changed hands, more than double the average daily volume.
