Rambus systems see the light of day in Europe.

IBM and various European OEMS have started promoting Coppermine and Rambus with very favorable pricing. Both 820 and 840 systems are reviewed in the European editions of PC Magazine with benchmark comparisons between Athlons and older Katmai generation Pentium IIIs. The Coppermine Rambus combinations dominating.

On a side note for those interested-

Discreet, the makers of 3D Studio Max, a commonly used application for testing floating point performance have a users forum at ktx.com. Some rendering benchmarks posted by users show A dual 733-Rambus combination from Compaq outpacing a dual 500 PIII by no less than 70% in a variety of rendering tasks.

Regardless of all the FUD, 840s plus Rambus pack a serious punch in applications that demand the fastest performance.

It also seems that 4 processor server motherboards will also be appearing this month from Supermicro using 840s and RAMBUS. The specs have up to 8 gigs of Rambus on board. This should make for some interesting analysis of how viable Rambus is for servers.

News also seems to be spreading fast around the net that the MTH that allows the 820 to work with SDRAM does not work very well. This seem to make all Rambus the only compelling choice for the 820. It would not be surprising to see SDRAM 820 combos vanish as soon as RDRAM ramps up and prices come down.
