One problem with the GG (Gorilla Game--a book) is that it is a metaphor collection run amok -- the term "King" applies to Compaq and JDSU, according to these people. Do you think CPQ and JDSU are in similar situations? I don't.

Pat, Do you think the barriers to entry for potential competitors to JDSU? Is the phrase "barriers to entry" not strong enough for this business? How would this sector be different than for example the semi-conductors?
My guess is the low yields on many components is what sets this sector apart.(and the need for specialists/scientists)

Are you heading out to any fibre optics conferences in the near term?

thank you.

Pat, I must agree that JDSU is a uniquely strong King. We are debating that point regularly on the G/K thread. Some are making the case that JDSU is a Gorilla because of its ownership of almost all the optical PhDs, economies of scale, and manufacturing techniques. What they lack though, is enabling technology.
