Java is actually one of the keys to the post-server era

Yup. Though I'm not as convinced that Msft will embrace it in the short term. They still see Java as that dreaded Sun technology that allows people to build applications that can run anywhere; especially not on Wintel.

Since the dawn of networked computers processing power has shifted back-n-forth between client and server; mainframes with dumb terminals, UNIX mini's with dumb terminals, (finally to the client)networked PC's with central file/app/print/data sharing, and now the "trend" being pushed (hyped) is back to thin client (dumb client) and big back end iron. Problem is no-one is willing to give up their smart desktop for a partially functional one; TCO is lower BUT so is productivity.

The time may soon coming for a network of peer machines - client/server is blurred or non-existent in that model - a.k.a. your "post-server era".

Cheers
James
